One of the leading innovators of automobiles in the United States is Tesla, and they have been at the forefront of “self-driving cars.” Yet, while these cars are not self-driving in the full and literal sense, they are a step forward to getting to that point. Recently, they have rolled out a new feature: being able to detect traffic lights and stop signs.

But how does Tesla autopilot work? Moreover, how does Tesla autopilot detect traffic lights and stop signs? Read on to discover all you need to know about these new technologies that Tesla is implementing.

What You Need to Know About Tesla Autopilot

Tesla autopilot is a feature provided by Tesla for several of their vehicles. It sounds like it is a fully automated car, but that is not necessarily the case. While the car can operate on its own, it is not a fully automated car.

Instead, the driver still needs to be in the driver’s seat. Additionally, the driver needs to be ready to take over driving at any time. It is a new technology, therefore it is in the process of moving toward being a fully automated car. As a result, there have been some issues with the system.

Nevertheless, many people want to experience this new technology, and with good reason. It is a glimpse into what automated driving could be. So, how does the autopilot feature work? Understanding the Tesla autopilot system can be broken down into three categories.

  • Cameras and Sensors. The autopilot system uses a collection of cameras and sensors to understand its surroundings as you drive.
  • Autopilot capabilities. The driver still needs to be ready to take over at any moment, so it is important to know what the capabilities of the autopilot system are.
  • Which cars have Tesla autopilot? Once you understand how the system works, you need to know which models have the autopilot feature if you want to try it yourself.

Tesla autopilot has its limitations, so understanding all these elements will ensure you are better equipped to make the right decision based on your wants and needs for your car.

Cameras and Sensors

A self-driving car analyzes its surroundings. This is what the Tesla autopilot does. Essentially, the technology in the car is mimicking what a driver would do. To do this, the vehicle needs to be equipped with technology that can see 360 degrees around the car. This will limit accidents and provide full coverage while driving.

Tesla autopilot does this with a series of cameras and sensors. It is equipped with eight cameras positioned around the vehicle that provide a 360-degree view of the car. These cameras can “see” up to 820 feet away from the vehicle as it is driving.

Tesla autopilot utilizes twelve ultrasonic radars around the vehicle. These sensors help detect objects, such as guardrails, curbs, and other hazards while driving. Additionally, the autopilot feature also comes with a radar system at the front of the car.

These elements allow the car to understand its surroundings while driving. Each of these tools works together to create the best possible analysis of the driving conditions. For example, if there is a vehicle in front of you, the cameras and sensors (and radar) will detect it and make sure you do not hit it.

Despite these cameras and sensors, it is important to stress that a Tesla autopilot vehicle has its limitations. The driver still needs to be monitoring everything as they drive in case they need to take control of the car.

Autopilot Capabilities

It is important to understand the capabilities of the autopilot feature on a Tesla vehicle. As mentioned, there are certain situations where the autopilot feature will have reached its limits. But, before it reaches its limits, what can it do?

Tesla autopilots have three main functions, along with some other minor features, too. Now, they are beginning to roll out the traffic light and stop sign detection system, but more on that later. The three main functions include:

  • Steering
  • Accelerating
  • Braking

While you are driving in a lane, the autopilot will be able to complete these three main functions. Additionally, among its other features, it will notify you when you should switch lanes based on driving conditions such as slow vehicles.

Moreover, if you have plugged in a specific destination into your Tesla, the autopilot will steer you toward the proper exits on your route. The technology that Tesla is incorporating into their autopilot vehicles is getting more advanced each year, and these vehicles are beginning to handle more complex situations.

Which Cars Have the Autopilot Feature?

Many Tesla vehicles have the autopilot feature built into their systems. Additionally, any car in the Tesla catalogue can be equipped with autopilot technology.

The models that have the autopilot feature automatically include the S, X, 3, and Y models. The autopilot feature is a Tesla-only technology, so it cannot be implemented on non-Tesla vehicles.

Tesla Autopilot Can Detect Traffic Lights

A new feature just recently added to the Tesla autopilot is the ability to detect traffic lights and stop signs. So, when you are driving a Tesla autopilot, the car will know when you are approaching a traffic light or stop sign.

Regardless of the color of the light, it will slow down and prepare to stop. Additionally, it will be able to recognize stop signs and stop accordingly. However, the driver still must manually make the turn after stopping, and the driver must also manually use the gas pedal to nudge the car forward.

This new feature is available on auto-steer systems and traffic-aware cruise-control systems. It is part of a hardware update to the autopilot system. However, how does the Tesla autopilot detect traffic lights?

  • Cameras. Using a forward-facing camera, it will “see” a stop sign or traffic light and will know to begin slowing down.
  • GPS. Using a GPS, the system will note where stoplights and stop signs are most likely located.
  • Maps. Used together with the GPS, data collected from the maps will let the system analyze where stop signs and traffic lights are most likely located.

However, since this is a new technology, the system will be more cautious as a result. What does this mean? The system will slow down and prepare to stop even if it is a green light, which can cause issues in its own way, especially if other vehicles are close by and not expecting you to slow down.

How Does It Detect Traffic Lights?

Using the cameras, GPS, and data from the maps, the autopilot feature on Tesla vehicles can detect traffic lights and stop signs. When you are driving the Tesla autopilot vehicles, these elements of the system will recognize that you are approaching an intersection.

When you get near the intersection, the camera at the front of the vehicle will analyze the traffic light. However, regardless of what color the traffic light is, it will slow down. This can pose some issues if it is a green light, however, since this system is still in the early stages, it is a safety precaution.

The driver must alert the system that it is a green light by pressing on the accelerator pedal or on the gear lever. This will override the car’s decision to stop and tell it that it is safe to proceed. This is why it is important to remember that this is not a fully automated car. The driver still needs to be aware and in control of the vehicle at all times.

However, it does not have the capability to then move forward after stopping in these situations. The driver must manually start pushing the gas pedal to alert the system that it is ready to move on. Also, the driver must manually make any turns necessary. Therefore, the driver must remain aware of the surrounding environment.
